Chapter 649 - 620: What Is a Married Couple?

Chapter 649 - 620: What Is a Married Couple?

Simon Forrester tossed a few glistening white shrimp into the pot, covered it with a lid, washed his hands, pulled out a disposable towel, and had just turned around when he saw Sienna Thornton standing dazed at the door. His heart skipped a beat, he dropped the towel and walked over, asking gently, "You’re back?"

Sienna came back to her senses, leaned her hand on the shoe cabinet, and looked down to find her slippers. But Simon’s greeting brought tears to her eyes, blurring her vision.

Her usual pair of slippers were nowhere to be found, and as she squatted down to search the bottom of the shoe cabinet, suddenly, she didn’t want to search anymore. She just hugged her knees and silently wept.

Simon left and came back at some point, holding her usual pink cotton slippers, and placed them at her feet: "I took them out to wash this morning since the weather was nice."

As he spoke, he scooped her up and carried her to the sofa, then returned to put the slippers on her feet.

"What’s wrong?" He held her in his arms again, "Weren’t you fine when you left this morning?"

She leaned against him, hugging herself and trembling, murmuring, "Back then, my mom was driven out of her home to wander about because the Grant Family threatened her family... The Grant Family wants to wipe us out!"

Simon’s heart grew heavy after hearing this.

She finally knew.

He hugged her tighter, providing a sense of security: "What did Thornton mean?"

She gritted her teeth: "He wants me to let go of all this and live well." As she spoke, the sobs disappeared, and her voice rose, "But how can I? Knowing what the Grant Family did to my mom back then! How can I let it go?"

For the first time, Simon didn’t know how to console her.

"This matter..." He paused, "What do you want the Grant Family to do to make up for your regrets?"

She didn’t answer, remaining silent.

Indeed, what must the Grant Family do for her to let go?

Back then, it didn’t result in any casualties nor any clear violations of the law, and even if she had the law as a weapon, she couldn’t prosecute the instigators.

But it’s precisely this irresponsibility that is most infuriating.

Sienna was consumed by hatred for the Grant Family all along, and when Simon asked her, she realized she hadn’t thought clearly about what she really wanted.

As time ticked by, she gradually calmed down.

"At the very least, the instigators should apologize to my mom and me!" she said firmly, "For those vicious acts the Grant Family did back then, apologizing is already letting them off easy!"

Simon agreed with this.

He nodded, "I support you, at least there should be an explanation and an apology."

As soon as he finished speaking, Sienna suddenly burst into tears in his arms, crying, "Thornton doesn’t support me, nor does he understand me. Only you support me... If it weren’t for you, I’d be all alone in this..."

He smiled, kissing her ear, "I told you five years ago, what is marriage? Parents will grow old, siblings will have their own families, and our children will grow up and leave us. From beginning to end, through all our lives, it’s each other. No matter what happens, I’m always on your side."

She cried even harder, clinging to him and wailing.

Opposite them, the stove emitted white steam, and the noodles boiled away. Simon smiled and patted her arm, "The noodles are almost overcooked, let’s eat first, sleep well tonight, and we’ll face everything together tomorrow."

"Okay."

...

The next day, the third day of the new year, the early spring northern city was sunny and windy. On Fenmore Hill, spring breezes blew through the budding branches.

Sienna sat in the yard, basking in the sun with the baby in her arms.

Simon came out after taking a phone call inside the house and said, "Thornton said he couldn’t reach you by phone."

Sienna, who was playing with the child, slightly retracted her smiling face and said lightly, "I didn’t want to answer."

"He said he’s going to your grandmother’s for dinner today and wants us to join. Mina Thorne and Seth Sutton will also be there."

"Mina Thorne?"

Sienna looked into the distance thoughtfully and, after a few seconds, replied, "Alright, we’ll go then!"

The family of three tidied up a bit and set off for the old mansion at Braden University around ten o’clock.

Old Mrs. Thorne hadn’t seen her great-grandson for a while and was so happy she almost cried. She held the baby and played on the swing outside, forgetting all about work.

Quentin Thorne and his eldest daughter and son-in-law sat in the living room making tea, all silent.

After a short while, Mina Thorne and Seth Sutton arrived.

If Sienna had no particular opinion about this sister before, knowing she was the granddaughter of that vicious old man made Sienna inevitably feel some related emotions.

Sienna didn’t greet Mina, not even a "Happy New Year," while Seth cheerfully asked her before even sitting down, "When are you planning for a second baby?"

Sienna rolled her eyes and ignored him.

Mina frowned at Seth as if asking: Why are you being so nosy?

Seeing no one responding to him, Seth awkwardly smiled and turned his attention to the unusually silent Quentin, asking, "Father-in-law, why didn’t you come back to the old mansion yesterday on the second day of the new year? We went early, but the door was closed, and nobody was there."

Quentin glanced at Mina and didn’t answer.

"We went to Wrayhaven," Sienna suddenly spoke up, "to my mom’s family home since the second day is for sons-in-law to visit."

Upon hearing this, Mina looked at Quentin with resentment and said, "You didn’t go to grandpa’s, nor did you wait for us at home yesterday because you went to that woman’s place as a son-in-law?"

"What do you mean ’that woman’? Watch your tone!" Sienna suddenly shouted, standing up and glaring at Mina.

Everyone present was startled by her outburst.

Simon wasn’t an exception.

He looked at his wife in shock.

Having known Sienna for so many years, he had never seen her so furious.

Mina also stood up angrily, confronting Sienna across Seth and Simon, "I didn’t even call your mother a ’mistress’ out of respect for you! Why are you yelling at me? Huh? Your mom is a mistress! You’re illegitimate! Do you have any right to be justified?..."

"Slap!" A crisp slap sound suddenly broke the daze, waking everyone up.

Mina clutched her cheek, looking at Sienna in shock, her eyes red.

Seth and Simon almost simultaneously reacted, each pulling their own wife back, afraid of a physical altercation starting.

"Annie!" Quentin came to his senses and sternly admonished his eldest daughter, "What are you doing? How can you hit someone?"

Simon immediately pulled Sienna behind him and faced Quentin, "Didn’t you hear what your youngest daughter just said? If you can’t educate her, then there’s no problem with Annie, as the elder sister, stepping in to do so."
