Chapter 691 The Failed Wand
Chapter 691 The Failed Wand
Chapter 691 The Failed Wand
In the evening, Siron returned to the Forbidden Forest with Harry, watching Hagrid and Slughorn drag Aragog into a deep pit behind the pumpkin patch, muttering something to it.
"How did you do that?" Harry asked in a low voice. "Aragog looks exactly the same as before, but didn't you already take its—heart?"
Harry paused for a moment, still finding it hard to accept the fact that the Octopod's heart was a tube.
"Yes, it took a lot of effort, cutting spells, healing spells and stuff. And since Aragog is already dead, getting its wounds healed is quite troublesome," Siren said. "But the fact that you say that proves I did a pretty good job."
"Yeah, it doesn't look any different," Harry said quietly. "But I think you don't have to go through all that trouble. Just talk to Hagrid directly. He might not refuse. Slughorn is like that."
As if to prove Harry right, Slughorn pulled two small glass bottles from his coat pocket as soon as he finished speaking.
“Hagrid, I don’t mean to disrespect your friend. But the venom of the Octopod is an extremely rare potion ingredient. Could you let me get some?” Slughorn said, emphasizing, “Don’t worry, I’m doing this purely for academic research.”
Slughorn was a little nervous; that was why he had spent the whole day comforting Hagrid, and in the process, he had impulsively given Harry a secret he had kept hidden for decades.
What a huge loss!
Slughorn regretted it a little after he regained consciousness, but there was nothing he could do, since Dumbledore had already seen all of his memories by then.
He could only find some solace elsewhere, such as trying to get a few more vials of the eight-eyed giant spider's venom later.
"It's no longer needed, is it?" Hagrid said, choking back tears, and granted his request.
"Ah, that's what I thought too," Slughorn said happily, then quickly put on a sad face.
"You see," Harry said, "Hagrid certainly won't refuse you."
"I know," Siren nodded. "In fact, Hagrid also knows that I took some things; I told him before."
"Then why did you risk your life to do that in the Forbidden Forest?" Harry asked, puzzled.
He remembered Hagrid saying that the eight-eyed spiders in the Forbidden Forest did not allow anyone other than Hagrid to approach Aragog.
However, Siren removed Aragog's heart, which shows how dangerous this act was.
"It's alright, it's not dangerous for me, and Hagrid isn't too upset either," Celen said.
"Is your wand ready?" Harry asked again.
Xilun suddenly stopped talking.
"Shillon?" Harry turned his head in confusion, thinking that Shillon hadn't heard him clearly, and asked again, "What does the wand you made from the heart of the eight-eyed spider look like? Can I see it?"
"Ah, I really wanted you to see it, but it failed," Xiren said quietly.
"Huh?" Harry was extremely surprised.
"What did you say? You failed?"
In his memory, Siron had never failed in making wands.
"You must be joking!"
Xilun sighed.
He hoped he was joking, but unfortunately he wasn't; he simply failed.
Because Siren wanted to use Slytherin's locket as the wand—ever since he accidentally created the Horcrux during his second year. He even made many wands with designs that were very different from traditional wands—such as a spherical wand shaped like the Golden Snitch, or jewelry wands shaped like rings or bracelets.
But once she actually started doing it, Xilun realized that those were nothing compared to the locket.
First and foremost—the runes on the staff.
Siren had no way of engraving the runes needed for the wand onto the Slytherin locket. No matter how hard he tried, his usual brass engraving knife chipped, but the locket remained unmarked.
This one question alone kept Celen thinking for an entire afternoon. If the owl that was delivering Hagrid's message hadn't popped open the window, Celen would probably still be in his dorm right now.
"It's okay—there's always a way." Harry noticed that Siren seemed troubled and immediately said, "I can write to Sirius and ask him to help me find a sharper carving knife. He definitely knows where to find one."
Harry has almost made it a habit to turn to Sirius Black when in doubt; in his view, Sirius can solve any problem, no matter how troublesome.
"I hope so," Siron said.
By this time, Slughorn had already left Aragog with half a vial of venom.
It wasn't that he didn't want to get more, but that Aragog's large claws only contained that much venom, and he couldn't squeeze any more out.
Perhaps the wait was too long, and the venom had dried, Slughorn thought to himself. Several hours had passed from morning till evening, and given the bright sunshine today, this wasn't surprising.
Though somewhat disappointed, Slughorn still stepped forward as Hagrid dragged Aragog into the pit, as agreed, and said in a slow, solemn tone: "Farewell, Aragog, Spider King. Those who knew you will never forget your loyal friendship! Your spirit will remain in your forest home, that tranquil place where spiderwebs intertwine—"

"Well said—well said—that's wonderful!" Hagrid cried out, collapsing to the ground and sobbing even harder.
Siren and Harry also pretended to rub their eyes.
Siron remained noncommittal regarding Slughorn's earlier statement about the friendship between Aragog and Hagrid.
But his later statement that he wanted the friendship to last forever seems rather unlikely.
The eight-eyed giant spider is a bloodthirsty and brutal magical creature whose diet includes almost all living things. Even if a wizard accidentally wanders into their territory, he will be treated as a delicious meal.
The reason these giant eight-eyed spiders in the Forbidden Forest have remained quietly in their nests is entirely because Aragog commands them to do so. Aragog forbids them from attacking Hagrid, nor allows them to leave the Forbidden Forest.
As descendants of Aragog, the eight-eyed giant spiders naturally would not disobey its commands.
But now that Aragog is dead, no one knows how long the orders he left behind will last. Perhaps after the eight-eyed spiders choose their next leader, they will add Hagrid and all the students in Hogwarts Castle to their diet.
But thinking about it carefully, it doesn't seem like a bad thing—at least Slughorn and Snape would be very happy.
