Chapter 16 Plant Crisis
Chapter 16 Plant Crisis
Chapter 16 Plant Crisis
The call came from the ventriloquist, who brought Chen Tao bad news:
The Death Shooter was threatening to disband and return to Gao Lao Zhuang—Chen Tao felt utterly exhausted.
He realized once again that reality is not an online game, and there is no such absurd setting as "you can see loyalty by recruiting soldiers".
The guys he recruited were all incredibly troublesome and eccentric.
Gordon stood there for a while and noticed that Batman didn't leave his side to answer the phone as he used to, so he consciously moved to the side and shrank back.
Chen Tao had the ventriloquist hand the phone to Death Shooter, then calmed himself, thought for a moment, and switched the voice to Death Shooter's own:
"OK, OK, even if you don't want the money, you have to save your life and reunite with your daughter. I respect your choice and wish you a happy life, but I still have some things to say."
Are you satisfied with this?
The Death Shooter on the other end of the phone had a strange expression on his face. The other person was trying to persuade him in their own voice, which was inexplicably unsettling.
"Listen, Lawton, I've investigated you. Your daughter's adoptive parents are just an ordinary family; they can't afford to give your daughter a good education."
"Your daughter is still in elementary school. Next, she'll go to the worst public middle school in the neighborhood, surrounded by dyed-haired, smoking, tattooed, and brawling thugs. Then she'll go to the worst high school—if she doesn't go astray. And then what?"
"Get pregnant one day by some redneck scumbag? And become a single mom, huh? Working as a cashier in a supermarket, out of shape, with sagging skin, is this the life you've planned for your daughter?"
"Shut up, you bastard!"
Deathshooter's anger was easily provoked. He shouldn't have been such a hot-tempered and easily angered fool, but no matter who it is, it's always hard to stay calm when family is involved.
"Ah—yes—that's right—her dad is the infamous Deadshot, a murderer wanted by more than 10 countries. The only difference between Zoe and other slum girls is that her awesome dad can shoot through the neck of any bad guy who gets close to her, and she also has some wealth she's accumulated over the years as a mercenary. But what good is that?"
"No matter how much money you have, the real upper echelons of those elite schools won't open their doors to Zoe. Besides, if you try to launder your dirty money, half of it will simply evaporate."
"You can launder your money, but what about your identity? Where do you want to take Zoe to live? The Sahara Desert or the East African Grand Canyon?"
"My dear mercenary, you wouldn't want your daughter to miss out on a good education, would you?"
"That's enough, stop talking!"
The Death Shooter's voice had an unusual pause, as if he was biting his tongue to stop the sound of his heart from escaping his mouth.
"I can get you a letter of introduction from one of Gotham's top universities, from Bruce Wayne or Jim Gordon."
"I can use financial operations to turn all of the $2 million I give you into Zoe's legitimate income."
"I can plan a perfect life for Zoe."
"..."
silence.
The Deadshot on the other end of the phone sighed. He hadn't expected that he would change his mind and surrender so soon after making a decision.
He didn't ask the other party if they could help him clear his name, because he knew that even if they could, they wouldn't do it for him.
What the other side needs is a combat-ready soldier who can fight and charge, not a seasoned veteran who's always thinking about retiring from the game.
"Okay, I understand. I'll help you..."
"What did you call me?"
"Boss."
The matter is resolved.
Provide the facts, lay out your bargaining chips, and complete the deal.
To be honest, Chen Tao couldn't be bothered to think about whether the other party was deliberately trying to raise the price, because it was pointless.
Once Bane is dealt with, his cooperation with these mercenaries will immediately end, the money and goods will be settled, the promises will be fulfilled, and then they will go on to their own wonderful lives, never to see each other again.
At least for now, he has complete control over Death Shooter, and that's enough.
Moreover, now that the National Guard has been deployed, does Bane think he can destroy an entire army by himself?
On a optimist note, perhaps Batman won't even need to intervene.
Chen Tao turned off the communication and looked at Gordon, preparing to discuss with him how to deal with Bane. He still had—wait, the other party seemed to be on the phone as well.
Jim Gordon turned his head, wiped his forehead, and smeared the sweat that seeped from the wrinkles onto his graying brown hair.
His expression was extremely serious.
"Wait for me a moment, Batman."
He said.
He hurriedly left the rooftop via the stairwell, and a few minutes later, Chief Gordon returned with a file folder, handing one of the documents to Chen Tao:
"You watch first, I'll tell you. Three days ago, Star Labs was attacked, and a living person was kidnapped: Harold Goldbloom, a chemistry professor, the leader of the chemical research department at GothCorp, an expert in biological warfare weapons, and a top-notch scholar in biology, botany, and toxicology..."
He showed Chen Tao a photo of a bald man with gray hair, who looked incredibly intelligent.
Chen Tao's heart skipped a beat when he saw that.
"This was supposed to be a very serious matter, but at the time, the Fireflies had just set fire to Elmer Pier."
Chen Tao then answered him, "And that perverted firefly had an orgasm while watching the dock turn into a torch, and then..."
Chen Tao paused for a moment, then suddenly realized that in the original history, Batman arrived at the scene immediately and beat the fireflies so badly that they fled in a sorry state.
But at that time, he had just transmigrated and was still trying to activate the [Alfred Protocol] using toilet paper from the Batcave, so—
"A fierce conflict broke out between the fireflies and the young men who rushed to the scene."
(The "young men" Gordon was referring to were his police officers.)
"Besides fireflies, there are also amygdalins, cannibals, two-faced men..."
Gordon rattled off a long list of names like reciting a menu, then continued, "Bane released too many people from Arkham Asylum, which delayed the Poison Ivy matter."
"But just 10 minutes ago, I received a report that the forensic team had used technical means to repair the damaged surveillance footage, and we suddenly discovered that Poison Ivy didn't steal Star Labs by herself—"
Chen Tao took the photo Gordon handed him; standing next to Poison Ivy was a terrifying-looking tree-man.
"Next, we discovered that Professor Goldbloom had just developed a large-scale bioweapon for GothCorp. If Poison Ivy and this inhuman monster intend to replicate this weapon and use it in the city..."
Chen Tao examined the photo carefully for a while.
"I know him. This guy is the Plant Master, Jason Wood," he said with certainty. He replicated the accident that created the Swamp Monster Alec Holland, turning himself into a walking plant and becoming a low-level representative of the magical power [Green of All Things].
"The green of all things, what the hell is that?"
"One elemental essence, representing plants, and the red of all living beings, representing flesh and blood, and the black of decay, representing corruption and death, are collectively known as the three fundamental forces."
"Okay, wait a minute," Gordon said. "You just mentioned magic, right?"
"I don't know why our discussion suddenly jumped from police dramas to superheroic battles."
