Chapter 11 Squeeze In
Chapter 11 Squeeze In
6 hours.
Qin Chuan glanced at the three swollen bumps. Under the blue moonlight, the bumps appeared a dark purple, and the surrounding skin was red and hot, clearly spreading outwards.
"Shishi, come here." Qin Chuan beckoned.
Lin Shishi leaned closer, and Qin Chuan lowered his voice: "Her right foot was bitten by something, and it's quite swollen. It looks like insect venom. You're a nurse, can you assess it? Can it be treated within six hours?"
Lin Shishi bent down and carefully lifted Liu Yifei's trouser leg to look at the three swollen bumps.
"It's a mosquito bite, but the swelling is too bad. A normal mosquito bite wouldn't cause this much swelling; this level of swelling indicates the presence of toxins. If it were a common mosquito bite, you could neutralize the toxins with an alkaline liquid, like soapy water. But we don't have soap..."
Lin Shishi frowned and thought for a long time.
"Brother Chuan, have you seen any grayish-white soil near the spring?"
Qin Chuan recalled, "There was a layer of clay next to the spring, its color a dark grayish-brown."
"That kind of clay may contain alkaline components. If the concentration is sufficient, mixing it with water and applying it to the wound can have a neutralizing effect."
Qin Chuan nodded: "I'll go dig some."
He stood up, walked to the spring, and used his folding knife to dig a clump of grayish-white clay from the edge of the water reservoir. He held it in his palm and smelled it; it had little to no smell and a very fine texture.
Take it back and hand it to Lin Shishi.
Lin Shishi mixed clay and water from the reservoir into a paste, applied it thickly to Liu Yifei's three swollen bumps, and then bandaged them with strips of torn cloth.
"This is just emergency treatment; I'm not sure if it can completely detoxify," Lin Shishi said nervously. "If only we had some herbal medicine..."
Throughout the process, Liu Yifei was half-leaning on Fan Yubing. She was still relatively conscious, but too weak to say more than a few words.
"Thank you..." she said softly, then looked at the half-eaten pork in her hand, "I'm sorry, I was just so hungry... seeing fire and meat here... I just..."
Qin Chuan squatted down in front of her and handed her the last coconut: "Drink some water first, drink slowly."
Liu Yifei held the coconut in both hands, her hands trembling violently, and coconut water dripped from the corner of her mouth.
She took several large gulps, shivered, and her eyes reddened.
Qin Chuan handed her another piece of roasted pork: "Eat."
Liu Yifei took the meat and chewed it in small bites. She ate very slowly, but you could tell she was starving; she chewed each bite thoroughly before swallowing.
Fan Yubing patted Liu Yifei on the back, like coaxing a child: "Eat slowly, don't choke."
Qin Chuan stood up and added two more pieces of firewood to the fire.
There are four people now.
He quickly calculated in his mind.
Liu Yifei is a graduate student in biology, a skill that would be incredibly useful on a desert island. Identifying plants, distinguishing between poisonous and non-poisonous species, and even seed cultivation are all core skills for long-term survival.
Fan Yubing is a yoga teacher with good physical fitness and flexibility, but this is of limited use in surviving on a desert island.
Lin Shishi is a nurse, and medical skills are a necessity, especially in an environment without medication.
Qin Chuan himself was responsible for hunting, building, and defending.
With four people, the team was already taking shape as a small group.
More importantly, Liu Yifei is the third female survivor, providing another source of "special ingredients".
Qin Chuan silently did the math in his mind. Three people, each using the skill once every 12 hours, that's 6 points of proficiency per day. He's still 8 points away from level 2 in his Eye Technique, meaning he could level it up in just over a day.
Of course, this is on the premise that Liu Yifei also has to accept the saying "more children, more blessings".
Originally, Qin Chuan had planned to "borrow" some proficiency from the past, but it's not convenient now.
But that's not urgent; let's save his life first.
After Liu Yifei finished eating a piece of pork and drinking the water from half a coconut, her complexion improved. She leaned against Fan Yubing, looking like a exhausted patient.
Lin Shishi squatted down beside her to check her pulse and then flipped her eyelids over.
"Your pulse is stronger now, much better than before. But your body temperature is still a bit low. Sister Yifei, you need to warm yourself by the fire."
Several people helped Liu Yifei move to the campfire, and Fan Yubing draped a banana leaf over her to shield her from the wind.
Liu Yifei's gaze swept over the three people's faces before finally settling on Qin Chuan.
"What...what's your name?"
"Qin Chuan."
"Are you on the ship?"
"Yes."
Liu Yifei said "Oh," and her lips twitched, as if she wanted to laugh but didn't have the strength to.
"You're amazing...you killed such a big pig."
Qin Chuan waved his hand: "I was lucky."
Liu Yifei warmed herself by the campfire for about twenty minutes, and her body temperature slowly rose.
Her consciousness became clearer, and she began to be able to speak in complete sentences.
Qin Chuan sat opposite her, adding firewood to the fire while subtly inquiring about her situation.
"How did you get to this island?"
Liu Yifei hugged her knees, staring at the flames, her voice flat: "I was organizing samples in the lab on the cruise ship. When that wave hit, the whole lab overturned, and tables, chairs, bottles, and jars all smashed onto me. After that, I don't remember anything. When I woke up, I was already in the water."
"Over there in the mangroves?"
"Yeah. There was water and tree roots everywhere. I was badly injured, so I climbed up a tall tree root and passed out. When I woke up at night, I saw a fire in the distance, so I crawled this way."
Qin Chuan thought for a moment: "How long did it take you to climb up here?"
Liu Yifei had a watch. She took it out of her pocket, looked at it, and said, "You climbed for two hours?"
The girl crawled alone in the dark for two hours, her feet swollen from mosquito bites. Qin Chuan couldn't help but think more highly of her.
However, Qin Chuan was thinking of something else: "Yifei, does the time on your watch match the time here?"
"It basically matches up. It gets dark at 6 pm, let's see what time it gets light tomorrow morning."
Qin Chuan nodded.
"What exactly do you do on the ship?" Fan Yubing asked.
"A biological consultant. I'm a graduate student in biology, pursuing my PhD. My advisor has a project with a cruise line, and I've been put on board to collect and process marine biological samples from the central Pacific Ocean."
Lin Shishi added, "Yes, I remember you. When you ate in the staff cafeteria, you always had a little notebook with you, and you'd doodle something while you ate."
Liu Yifei's lips curved slightly: "That's a plant atlas. I'm used to jotting down the shapes of plants I see."
Qin Chuan's eyes lit up: "Yifei, are you good at agricultural planting?"
Liu Yifei nodded: "Actually, my main profession is seed breeding and livestock research; these are my areas of expertise."
Finally, I've found a helper.
With her, the variety of food can be greatly expanded. Relying solely on hunting and gathering seafood will certainly not be enough in the long run; a source of plant-based food is essential.
Qin Chuan stood up, walked to Liu Yifei, and extended his hand. "Welcome to the team."
Liu Yifei paused for a moment, then reached out and touched Qin Chuan's hand. Her fingers were thin and cool, and the pressure was so light that it was almost imperceptible.
"Thank you," she said, bowing her head.
"No need to thank me, one more person means one more effort." Qin Chuan withdrew his hand, looked at the three bandaged mosquito bites, and asked, "Is your foot alright? Will you be able to walk tomorrow?"
Liu Yifei tried moving her right ankle, wincing in pain. "It should be fine. I ate pork and drank coconut water; I feel much better."
"Okay, get some rest."
Liu Yifei nodded.
Lin Shishi checked the dressing on her foot again: "The clay will scab over after it dries, so I'll change it again tomorrow morning. Yifei, why don't you squeeze in with us tonight?"
The three women rearranged their sleeping positions. The tent was already cramped, and with an extra person, it was even more crowded. The three women lay side by side on the banana leaves, shoulder to shoulder.
Qin Chuan was still keeping watch outside, sitting by the campfire with his folding knife beside him.
He added the last piece of firewood to the fire, then leaned his head against the tree trunk and closed his eyes for a short rest.
I don't know how much time passed, but the eastern horizon began to lighten slightly. The sun hadn't risen yet, but the sky had already changed from deep blue to light gray.
It was still dark, but Lin Shishi appeared beside him at some point: "Brother Qin Chuan, it's almost dawn now, you should go and rest, I'll take over the watch."
Lin Shishi is still the most considerate.
Qin Chuan groggily opened his eyes and nodded: "Okay, shout if there's danger."
"OK."
Qin Chuan entered the tent; it was dark inside, and he couldn't see clearly. He found an empty spot and lay down.
But after sleeping for a short while, Qin Chuan found himself between Fan Yubing and Liu Yifei, arranged in a male-female pattern.
His hands would occasionally touch something soft. Sometimes, someone's leg would drape over him, and sometimes, someone's hand would unintentionally be placed in a bird's nest.
There was nothing he could do; Qin Chuan was simply too tired. He didn't care anymore, closed his eyes, and got some rest.
