Chapter 3, Second Time: No Need to Verify Scumbags
Chapter 3, Second Time: No Need to Verify Scumbags
Warmth's heart plummeted to rock bottom.
Wen Xu used to reflect on herself, feeling that she hadn't done a good enough job with housework and that she always couldn't help but argue with Lu Heng, which was why he was always angry. She wanted to go back to when they first met, and she wanted to find Lu Heng's gentle side again. Now she realized that she should reflect on how too good she had been to him.
Wen Xu took Tang Lin's phone; it had a number she didn't recognize. Given Lu Heng's intelligence, he wouldn't leave any traces that could be used to track her. This was her only chance to talk to him.
"You should feel guilty towards me, otherwise I won't do as you wish."
Lu Heng didn't speak, he just hung up the phone. Wen Xu thought that if she cried and accused Lu Heng of treating her this way, she could buy some time, but it wouldn't be enough time for him to call the police. Besides, she didn't want her suffering to give Lu Heng any more pleasure.
Wen Xu didn't return the phone to Tang Lin, but instead stuffed it into her pocket. Tang Lin was stunned. Before she could react, Wen Xu returned to the private room and used disposable gloves she got from the waiter to secure the straw.
"What are you doing? Do you suspect I would drug you? I, Shao Ziwen, would never do such a thing!"
Shao Ziwen's voice changed completely at the end. In his own eyes, he was a better person. It wasn't that he wouldn't sleep with women other than his wife, but most of the time the women threw themselves at him, and he just went with the flow.
"You may not know how, but you do have some sense. When a woman says no, she means no. And if she acts no, she also means no. Don't ignore the messages she's sending. If you only care about your own pleasure, you're nothing but a high-class scumbag."
Wen Xu clearly remembered her first life. She began to show resistance while in a coma, but Shao Ziwen did not stop. He thought it was a natural progression, but he made her die a very ugly death.
Wen Xu left the dumbfounded Shao Ziwen standing there, while Tang Lin chased after her onto the elevator.
"What am I supposed to do now that you're gone? Do you want me to take your place?"
"ha?"
Even if Tang Lin hadn't come with Wen Xu, Wen Xu would still have sought out Tang Lin and asked her why she was so afraid of Lu Heng. But Wen Xu didn't understand why Tang Lin would have such unconventional thinking.
"Even if you're the scum who ruined me, I won't let you go through this garbage. I didn't want to go through this myself, and I never intended for anyone else to. Is this how Lu Heng controls you?"
Tang Lin shook her head quickly, her eyes darting left and right.
"He'll find out, what should I do?"
No matter how Wen Xu asked Tang Lin why he listened to Lu Heng, Tang Lin refused to say, only showing great fear, crying and making sounds like howling.
"Stop crying. You're not dead yet, are you?"
"Um?"
Tang Lin's eyes widened; she seemed not to understand what Wen Xu was saying.
"As long as you're not dead, you still have a chance to escape. Use your beautiful brain to think this through. I don't know what leverage Lu Heng has over you, but it can't be worse than death."
Wen Xu knew, because she had been inexplicably killed once before. She had to admit that she was also an accomplice; she had tolerated Lu Heng hurting her time and time again, and she had made up all sorts of excuses for Lu Heng. Now, she would never make the same mistake again.
She turned and took a few steps before turning back to look at Tang Lin. "Don't think this is all over. I will pay the price for what you've done, sooner or later, but not now, and not in a way that I myself would not approve of."
As she stepped off the elevator, Tang Lin behind her murmured, "What's going on with you two, husband and wife?"
Wen Xu did not answer; she would probably only know the answer after she met Lu Heng.
The wind and rain outside the hotel had stopped, the sky was cloudless, and there were small puddles on the ground. A black crow was drinking water by the roadside, and a taxi whizzed past it.
She hailed a taxi and headed straight home, wanting to know how Lu Heng would treat her now.
As soon as she got on the bus and gave her destination, she suddenly felt a fatigue spreading from her shoulders to her limbs. She thought it was a side effect of not yet recovering from the surgery, but it didn't feel like that. It felt like she had fallen into the sea, with countless hands grabbing her limbs and trying to pull her down.
A sudden wave of annoyance washed over her; now was no time for her to sleep peacefully!
Anger fueled her right fist, which slammed into the back of the taxi driver's seat, but with that one blow, all the force was dissipated from her.
"What just happened? Was I seeing things?"
Wen Xu heard another voice in her ear, the voice of a young woman, definitely not the male driver who was in the same car as her.
"It must be a system bug. This lousy show only knows how to collect money; can't they at least make decent content? Refund! Refund!"
Another young man was talking to her, followed by the crunching sound of potato chips, which made Wen Xu feel uneasy, as if she were peeping into someone else's living room. When Wen Xu opened her eyes again, she saw the ceiling of her own bedroom.
She had never liked the transparent chandelier hanging overhead; its 108 beautiful diamond pendants and 72 teardrop-shaped crystal decorations made it seem heavy and precarious. She always imagined it would fall and hit her on the head. There were two chandeliers in the house, each as big as her upper body; the other was in the living room.
She found herself a week in the future. She didn't know why, but memories of that week flooded her mind instantly.
After leaving the hotel that day, she called the police, submitted the preserved straw as evidence, and recounted everything that had happened in the hotel. She only changed her story, saying that she went to the gym's changing room to find Tang Lin, but instead claimed she got lost while looking for the restroom and happened to witness Tang Lin and her husband plotting to harm her.
The police listened patiently to her description, but the investigation stalled. Tang Lin disappeared after that day. Shao Ziwen only admitted to seeing Wen Xu in the lobby, denying that he had approached her. The hotel staff also insisted that they only saw Shao Ziwen enter the restaurant's private room alone. As for Lu Heng, the mastermind, he was undergoing a gastroscopy under general anesthesia at the time of the incident and had no time to make a phone call.
Lu Heng, who rushed directly from the hospital to the police station, was very weak, and even his voice was weak when he answered. The angrier Wen Xu was, the more he trembled. The two of them staged a scene in front of the police where a sickly man was threatened by his shrewish wife.
Wen Xu knew how good her husband was at pretending in public, so she stopped arguing and waited patiently. Because she had called the police, Lu Heng was furious with her but dared not lay a hand on her. However, when the test results for the straw came back, Wen Xu was stunned. The straw was contaminated and could not be used as evidence.
Up to this point, all the evidence that could prove Lu Heng harmed her had disappeared.
"We have a great psychologist in our community."
The police officers practically had "You have paranoia" written all over your face. Not only the police, but everyone else was baffled as to why a perfect man like Lu Heng, a perfect husband, would resort to such a vicious method to harm his wife.
Wen Xu herself couldn't understand it either. She questioned Lu Heng, but Lu Heng showed a dazed expression, as if Wen Xu really had paranoia.
Wen Xu didn't delve any further into the real reason. She didn't need to exhaust all means to verify that Lu Heng was truly a scumbag, because she knew that if she stayed with Lu Heng, she would be killed.
