Chapter 202 Performance Report
Chapter 202 Performance Report
Meeting room in the Hokage Building of Konoha.
Jiraiya led the way and walked in first, followed by Nishikawa Tetsu, who had a calm expression, and Uchiha Fugaku, who still had a stern face but whose eyes were noticeably more relaxed.
The meeting room was filled with smoke, and the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, sat in the main seat, puffing out clouds of smoke.
Meanwhile, a golden figure had been waiting for some time on one side of the conference table.
"Teacher, Tetsu, Fugaku-senpai."
Minato Namikaze stood up, his iconic green Jonin vest standing out sharply under the lights, a warm smile on his face.
He returned to the village ahead of time to settle Rin and Team 7. Today, the Hokage specifically handed him over to wait for Jiraiya to come to the meeting.
"Please sit down."
Hiruzen Sarutobi put down his pipe, his old eyes, which had seen so much in life, now filled with satisfaction and appreciation.
Besides the Hokage, the two advisors, Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu, also sat upright.
"Thanks for your hard work."
The Third Hokage spoke first, his voice loud and clear.
"The two advisors and I have already seen the report of victory on the battlefield in the Land of Grass. Facing pressure from Iwagakure, Kumogakure, and even Kirigakure, you not only held the line but also displayed the might of Konoha, even capturing the Third Raikage and forcing Onoki to retreat."
"This is the most glorious victory Konoha has achieved in foreign wars since the Second Hokage."
Mitokado Homura adjusted his glasses and nodded in agreement, saying, "The complexity of the battlefield in the Land of Grass, in particular, far exceeds that of other defensive lines. We had to deal with the power struggles between major nations while also guarding against treacherous conspiracies. Jiraiya, your command this time was excellent and your contribution was immense."
"Oh, don't flatter me."
Jiraiya scratched his head, leaned back in his chair without any regard for his image, and waved his hand.
"I was just there to lend a hand; it's these young people who are turning the tide."
Jiraiya pointed to the three people beside him, his tone filled with pride as a teacher.
"Minato single-handedly suppressed the Tailed Beast and defeated A on the battlefield; that kid Che's tactics and new weapons directly crippled Iwagaku's demolition squad, and as for Fugaku..."
Jiraiya glanced at the young Uchiha clan leader sitting beside him with his arms crossed.
"Not only did he use Susanoo to directly confront the Eight-Tails on the battlefield of the Land of Rice Fields, but he also arrived in time to guard against the sneak attack from the Hidden Cloud Village on the battlefield of the Land of Grass, which is a great achievement."
"This is a victory for the collective."
Nishikawa Tetsu spoke up at the opportune moment, steering the conversation to a more grassroots level.
"Lord Hokage, besides us, every ninja on the front lines deserves our praise. Especially the Hyuga clan's reconnaissance squad, the hastily assembled heavy artillery unit, and..."
Nishikawa Toru glanced at Minato and continued:
"And then there's Team 7 and my squad, Kakashi, Obito, Rin, as well as Shisui, Kurenai, and Guy. These kids' performance on the battlefield has completely surpassed the level of genin. They are the future hope of Konoha."
"Yes, I've already had the commendations for these children drafted." The Third Hokage nodded with a smile. "Especially Might Guy's father, Might Day, whose deeds have spread throughout the village. He is the best embodiment of the Will of Fire."
The atmosphere in the meeting room was harmonious and enthusiastic, a relaxed moment after a resounding victory.
However, as the pleasantries ended, the conversation inevitably veered towards a more sensitive and central topic.
The Third Hokage tapped his pipe, his smile fading, and his gaze became profound.
"Next, we're going to discuss something even more important."
His gaze swept over the crowd and finally settled on Uchiha Fugaku.
"About Uchiha Obito."
The meeting room fell silent instantly.
The air seemed to freeze, and Jiraiya sat up straight, his smile fading.
"Based on the previous emergency report from Watergate, as well as battlefield records."
Mitomon Yan opened a top-secret file in his hand, his tone becoming serious.
"During the operation to rescue Rin Nohara, Obito Uchiha, under extreme emotional fluctuations, directly skipped the three-tomoe stage and touched upon... the Mangekyou Sharingan in a short period of time."
"Although it degenerated later due to chakra depletion, the fluctuation of that eye power cannot be faked."
Koharu, the girl in the tsunomoto, chimed in, her gaze fixed intently on Fugaku:
"Fugaku, you should know better than us what this means. The Uchiha clan has produced two pairs of 'legendary eyes' in just a few years."
One pair was on Fugaku, and the other pair was on Obito.
When Danzo was still alive, this kind of thing would definitely be regarded as irrefutable evidence of the "Uchiha threat theory".
Even now, some conservative leaders in the village privately have reservations about this, worrying that the Uchiha's power is growing too large and will once again threaten the village's balance.
Fugaku clenched his hands slightly on his knees, but he did not look away. Instead, he raised his head and looked directly at the Hokage and the two advisors.
"Gentlemen, are you worried that the Uchiha clan will lose control?"
Fugaku's voice was calm, but it carried an undeniable power.
"A few years ago, I might have avoided this question, but now..."
Fugaku pulled a thick ledger from his pocket; it was the annual profit distribution report for Konoha Heian Co., Ltd. and Konoha Electric Power & Home Appliance Service Co., Ltd.
He gently pushed the ledger in front of the two advisors.
"This is the contribution that the police department and the Uchiha clan have made to the village over the past year. Our clansmen are already changing. Some of them will even take the initiative to help merchants move goods, help people in need, and even fight to the death to protect their comrades on the battlefield."
"That's especially true of Obito."
Fugaku looked at Minato.
"Minato, tell me, why did Obito awaken his Sharingan?"
"To save my comrades."
Minato answered without hesitation, his eyes resolute.
"Rin was in danger at the time, and Obito unleashed that power in despair to protect her. Although that power was cold, what I felt from it was intense love and protection, not some evil curse."
"That's right."
Nishikawa Tetsuya also spoke up.
"The Uchiha's power stems from love, a fact that the Second Hokage already demonstrated. Although Obito may seem like a loser, his Will of Fire is purer than anyone else's. If we were to suspect him because he possesses great power, that would truly push him to the opposite side."
Hearing these words, Koharu Tsurugi picked up the thick ledger and looked at the heart-pounding numbers on it. Her previously tense facial features softened.
"Hiruzen, I think Fugaku has a point."
Xiaochun closed the account book and looked at the three generations.
"We've all seen the Uchiha's performance over the past two years. They're no longer the closed-off, arrogant clan they once were. The current police department is a calling card for the village and a pillar of its finances."
Mitokado Homura nodded and sighed, "If Danzo were still alive, he would definitely have used this as an excuse to launch an attack. But now it seems we were overthinking it. Power itself is neither right nor wrong; the key lies in where the hearts of those who wield that power lie."
"Obito is a member of Team 7, a disciple of Minato, and a new generation of Konoha ninja we've watched grow up."
The change in the two consultants' attitudes completely eased the atmosphere in the meeting room.
This is the principle that the economic base determines the superstructure.
When the interests of the Uchiha clan and the village are closely intertwined, and when they become an indispensable part of the village, the so-called threat theory naturally falls apart.
The Third Hokage smiled with satisfaction.
He looked at Fugaku with eyes full of trust.
"Fugaku, now that the advisors have said so, I'm relieved."
"Regarding Obito's eyes, the village will not impose any restrictions or surveillance. On the contrary, we will provide the necessary resources to help him grow."
"But..." The Third Hokage changed the subject, his tone becoming serious, "The power of the Mangekyou Sharingan is too domineering, placing a tremendous burden on the body and mind. Obito is still young, and his mind is not yet fully mature."
"I see."
Fugaku stood up and bowed deeply to the third generation and the two advisors.
"As the young head of the Uchiha clan, I have a responsibility to teach Obito."
Fugaku raised his head, his dark eyes gleaming with unwavering determination.
"I will tell him that these eyes are not tools for showing off or seeking revenge, but a shield to protect those who are important to him."
"I will teach him how to control that power, instead of being consumed by it."
Fugaku glanced at Nishikawa Toru and Minato beside him, a faint smile playing on his lips.
"I will never let him go astray."
"good!"
The Third Hokage slammed his fist on the table, making the final decision.
"In that case, it's settled. Obito Uchiha will be designated as a key figure for the village's development, with Minato Namikaze continuing his guidance, and Fugaku Uchiha will be responsible for the clan's legacy education."
"in addition……"
The Third Hokage stood up, walked to the window, and looked out at the peaceful Konoha Village.
"The war is drawing to a close, and the work that follows is also very important."
The threat to Sunagakure and Iwagakure is temporarily gone; the main concern now is the situation in Kumogakure and Kirigakure, which is still not fully settled.
Because of the Third Raikage as a hostage, Kumogakure had the idea of peace talks, but Kirigakure had not given any news at all.
After the meeting, everyone walked out of the Hokage Building.
As the sun set, it cast long shadows of the three people.
"Senior, those words you just said were pretty cool," Nishikawa Tetsu nudged Fugaku's arm with his elbow and teased.
Fugaku straightened his collar, resuming his aloof demeanor.
"I'm just stating the facts. Obito may be an idiot, but he's still a member of the Uchiha clan. If he goes astray, I'll be the one who loses face."
Minato smiled and said, "Don't worry, senior. With Rin and Kakashi around, Obito won't go too far astray."
"Let's go home."
Nishikawa Tetsu stretched.
"Whose house are we going to for dinner tonight? Mikoto-nee should have cooked by now, right?"
"Get out! Go back to your own home!"
Fugaku cursed, but slowed his pace, as if waiting for the two shameless guys to catch up.
